Calmer Classrooms

Frequently Asked Questions

"Who's behind the idea?"

My name's Vo Fletcher. I'm a guitarist/composer. I've played and recorded in a lot of bands with a load of great people, including The Ric Sanders Group, Fairport Convention, Touch & Go, Nigel Kennedy, John Etheridge, Dave Swarbrick, Andrew Cronshaw, The Albion Morris Band, Rik Mayall, and I write music for TV. I used to be a presenter on Channel 5 but I'm alright now.

"Will playing music in the classroom be distracting?"

The music has been designed to be played very quietly - in the background.   It should be played at such a level that is just audible - it is at that level when the music is at its most effective.   In fact it has been designed NOT to be listened to !

"How long will it take before I see results?"

The music has been designed to be effective within about ten seconds of it commencing to play.   Given the nature of classrooms and the teaching process, it may take up to ten minutes before you notice that there has been a change.   And if you have any doubt about what has caused that change, just try switching off the music after about ten minutes of playing it.   The change will be quicker and more noticeable!!

"What about the differing musical tastes of the pupils and teachers?"

There are ten different musical styles - ranging from 'New Age' to 'Bollywood'.   However because the music should just be audible, listeners are only aware of the different styles when they concentrate on listening to the music. We do suggest that the different styles are rotated on a daily basis.   You MAY find that a particular piece is not effective as the others, for your pupils, (evidence seems to indicate that this maybe due to cultural differences) and so you may decide to exclude a particular piece of music from your rotation. Generally speaking all of the music music is suitable for all ages and abilities.

"How many different pieces of music are available?"

Currently there are ten pieces each of a different music style. We will be developing other musical styles and these will be made available in due course.

"For how long does each piece of music play for?"

Each piece plays for between 60 and 70 minutes. However it has been designed to be played 'on repeat' and so, effectively, each piece will run the whole teaching day

"Will it lose its effectiveness over time?"

Because of the way the music works on the brain and that it has been designed to be played at a barely audible volume, there is no reason why it should lose its effectiveness. It has been in use for over two years and there have been no reports of any loss of effectiveness.

"Does it only work for pupils?"

No! It is effective for everybody. We have had reports that it has made teacher meetings more productive and less fraught, and even that it has helped to defuse confrontations with irate parents.

Even my hard-nosed 'no nonsense' accountant uses it to prolong his periods of concentration !

"Is it more effective for the more able pupils?"

Research indicates that it is equally - if not more - effective for less able pupils and those pupils with attention difficulties.   Also there have some very positive results with special needs children. Click here for more information.

"Aren't other types of music just as effective?"

Whilst certain Baroque pieces have been used to cut learning times and increase retention, independent research (see below) has demonstrated that that our music is significantly more effective .   Our music has been designed specifically and engineered for the classroom environment and, for today's generation

"Has there been any independent research on its effectiveness?"

Yes. The University of Worcester conducted a research study - under controlled conditions - on a range of different music styles clearly showed that our music achieved the highest scores of all . (A executive summary of this study is available on request from us)

"Where is it being used?

In secondary, primary and special schools. In classrooms, offices, reception areas and dinner halls.
